Bodega Chacra
Bodegas Chacra was founded in 2004 by Piero Incisa della Rocchetta, a member of the family behind Sassicaia in Tuscany. His ambition: to find the purest and most uninhibited expression of the climate, microclimate, and terroir of Mainqué, in the remote Río Negro region of Patagonia.
In Patagonia, a “chacra” is not merely a piece of agricultural land, but also a vital energy place, connected to everything that lives and vibrates. This philosophy lies at the heart of the estate’s work: biodynamic and organic, with respect for biodiversity and minimal human intervention.
The terroir provides exceptional conditions for pinot noir. Warm, sunny days are tempered by strong, cool winds from the Andes, while nighttime temperatures can drop up to 40°C lower than daytime. This combination lengthens the growing season, preserves natural acidity, and enhances aromatic complexity. The soils range from light sand and loam to iron-rich clay, including the characteristic “barda” slopes.
The vineyards consist exclusively of ungrafted, massal-selection vines, some planted as early as 1932. They are tended by hand and receive only natural preparations made from the estate’s own plants and animals. Irrigation is supplied through historic 19th-century canals, ensuring the vines thrive in the dry desert climate.
In the cellar, meticulous care is taken: fermentation with native yeasts, aging in cement and carefully selected French oak, with no fining or filtration. Everything is focused on preserving the liveliness, elegance, and minerality that make Patagonian terroir so unique.
