Virna Borgogno Barolo 'Sarmassa' 2020
Regular price €68,70Sarmassa is one of the most expressive and structured crus in the Barolo zone. This wine from Virna Borgogno comes from south-facing vineyards in the eponymous parcel in Barolo, at an altitude of 250 to 260 metres. The Nebbiolo, planted in the 1970s and 1980s, grows here on rich, well-drained soils that bring power and finesse in perfect balance.
After a long maceration of 15 to 20 days, the wine matures for about 18 months in a combination of large Slavonian oak barrels and 500-liter French oak tonneaux (Allier). After a rest period in stainless steel, the wine is bottled and matures in the bottle for at least another six months.
In the glass, the Sarmassa shows itself with a still fresh nose of red fruit and subtle spicy and woody notes. In the mouth it is dry, full and powerful, with an impressive structure and firm tannins that guarantee a long life. This is a Barolo with backbone, which develops beautifully with age.
A wine for lovers of classic, structured Barolo – ideal for those who appreciate patience. Serve at 16°C and give it time to breathe in a wider glass and/or a carafe in its youth.
