Crystallum The Agnes chardonnay 2023
Regular price €34,90Crystallum, located in the breathtaking Hemel-en-Aarde Valley of South Africa, is a family-owned estate run by brothers Andrew and Peter-Allan Finlayson. Since its founding in 2007, the estate has focused entirely on pinot noir and chardonnay, with vineyards situated on carefully selected top sites. The result is refined, elegant, and deeply expressive wines that reflect the character of their terroir.
The Agnes is named after the brothers’ great-grandmother, Agnes Floyd. Arriving in South Africa at the age of 14, she became renowned in Cape Town as the first woman to hold a driver’s licence, a strong and characterful personality both literally and figuratively. This cuvée honours her resilience and broad-shouldered strength: a blend from multiple vineyards that displays a wide spectrum of aromas and flavours.
The vineyards for this chardonnay are located in Hemel-en-Aarde and Overberg. After harvest, spontaneous fermentation takes place in French oak barrels (228 and 500 litres), where the wine matures for nine months following alcoholic fermentation. The Agnes opens with a fresh and crisp profile, develops a rich, rounded mid-palate, and integrates its acidity perfectly. The finish is intense and long, with retronasal aromas of green apple, dried citrus, and a subtle hint of fresh almond.
