Nittardic

Nittardi is a small wine estate located in the heart of the Chianti Classico region, with vineyards in Chianti Classico and Maremma.
The Nittardi estate, on the border between the provinces of Siena and Florence, was originally a defensive tower known as "Nectar Dei" (the nectar of God) as early as 1183. In the 16th century, the estate belonged to the Renaissance artist Michelangelo Buonarroti, who in 1549, when he was putting the finishing touches on the Sistine Chapel, wrote to his cousin Lionardo: "I would rather have two barrels of wine than eight shirts. Michelangelo also brought Nittardi wine to Rome as a “genuine gift to Pope Paolo III.” Today, in honor of that tradition, the first bottles of Nectar Dei, the top wine from the Maremma vineyards, are presented to the Pope every year .
Today, the wine estate is run by the Femfert family and has been heavily invested for the future since its acquisition in 1992. Almost all vineyards were replanted and the old winery was converted into a modern and neat winery. The link with Michelangelo and art is still honored today, the labels of Casanuova di Nittardi are always decorated with a label and wrap of well-known artists.
In 1999, the family bought an estate in the Maremma with 20 hectares of vineyards, where international grape varieties such as Cabernet and Merlot are planted. The domain stands for fine wines from sustainable and organic cultivation.
